Researchers can now seriously consider exploiting microgravity to speed research and getting to market. Short durations of microgravity are available today via drop towers (up to 5 seconds), parabolic airplane flights (up to 30 seconds), and sounding rockets (up to 15 minutes).
Longer durations of microgravity in Earth orbit will be routinely accessible for the first time starting in approximately 2010. Researchers will be able to fly experiments in orbit via commercial providers, perform automated experiments on a commercial free-flier, and consider the impressive laboratory capabilities of the International Space Station. Also in that timeframe, experiment accommodations on suborbital tourism flights may be available.
